Global Action 4 Mental Health
Vision: To create communities that promote mental health and wellbeing
in low and middle income countries.
Mission: To provide resources and expertise for the development of sustainable community support for people with serious mental health issues in low and middle income countries through the creation of unique community resource centers.
The founding leadership team has expertise working in diverse community-based settings with people living with mental illness. We have vast experience in building and growing highly successful Fountain House model programs and culturally sensitive and resilient community-based mental health services. We have come to believe that for low and middle income countries, a new approach is needed to establish good quality community based mental health and support services. Mental health leaders in Kenya and elsewhere in Africa have asked us to collaborate in the development of a new prototype to bring the best of the Fountain House approach and community-based psychiatry to places with challenging economic conditions, high unemployment, poverty, and a limited number of trained professionals.
Our starting point for healing and growing is a place and a purpose. People need a place to come to which they belong and where they can participate in the creation of a support system they have helped to build. This community center is the hub of a network that includes but is not limited to people living with mental health issues. Our goal will be not just to alleviate the problems caused by mental illness but to create active and vibrant citizens.
